Mourning Hall Dortmund Main Cemetery

light contemplative

Place: Dortmund

Category: Temples & Churches

The imposing mourning hall forms the core of the group of buildings in Dortmund's main cemetery. Dortmund's main cemetery is still the largest green area in the city and one of the largest cemeteries in Germany.

The group of buildings was created by the Dortmund architects Heinrich Strunck & Josef Wentzler together with the city building officer Hans Strobel in the 1920s.

The renovation of the interior, which lasted several years, was carried out by the renowned office of Böll Architects, Essen. KOBER lighting designers are responsible for the planning and implementation of the new lighting.

All those involved intuitively pursued the goal of not only preserving the special atmosphere of this spiritual, listed room through the complex restoration and the new lighting, but also of increasing the contemplative effect. In addition to the energetic refurbishment of the lighting using modern LED lighting technology, the design of all visible lights was adapted to the time when they were built in the 1920s. The majority of the luminaires were installed out of sight for visitors to enable a visually unobtrusive and glare-free emphasis on the architectural details.
