Lighting design for the mall and facades of the Thier Galerie in Dortmund

The Thier Galerie Shopping Center was built on the site of the former Thier Brewery. The traditional brewery in the best downtown location was founded in 1854 and closed in 1992. The existing vacant lot was closed by a spacious and light-flooded structure. This resulted in a sales area of approx. 33,000 square meters with over 160 specialist shops, cafés and restaurants.

In line with the beer tradition of the area, the upper floors were covered with golden expanded metal. Behind it are the parking decks for visitors. The surrounding golden "crown" becomes a special highlight of the facade in the evening when it is particularly emphasized by grazing light wallwashing. Particular attention was paid to avoiding light pollution. The very economical LED lights are equipped with a special asymmetrical lens technology, which directs the light very precisely and softly onto the facade, without radiating beyond the edge of the roof or creating hotspots on the facade. In addition, the verticality of the natural stone facades was emphasized by wall-mounted up-downlights and the building was thus grounded. In the combination, the gallery is preserved in the cityscape both close and long-distance effect.

The inputs each have their own quality. The large glass joint, which depicts the old silver route - an important trade route in medieval Dortmund - impresses with its airiness. In the large volume, two luminaire pendant rings with a diameter of more than 6.00m and a large area luminaire with daylight quality set special accents.
Depending on the time of day, both systems can create comfort with different color temperatures in the white light and brightness settings. At the entrance door, the customer is welcomed with a carpet of light. The foyer of the old Thier administration building was renovated taking into account the quality of the existing architecture and thus retaining the charm of the 1950s. The chandelier in the atrium, with its more than 600 individual glasses, has been restored to its former glory.

The lighting in the mall places particular emphasis on the energy concept through the use of efficient lights with the latest reflector and lamp technology, an appropriate reduction in the illuminance of the mall areas and daylight-dependent light scenes. The light color in the mall can be adapted to the respective mood outside. It can reflect the course of the day from refreshing daylight to a warm evening atmosphere and thus support the perception and well-being of the customer.
