Restaurant LuMiná

The Arabian Lightport

Place: Münster

Category: Hotels, Bars & Restaurants

Atmospheric lighting design for the LuMiná restaurant in the new PSD bank building at the port of Münster.
Where ships transshipped their cargo just a few years ago, creative professional groups, cafés, bars and restaurants have now settled. The LuMiná was opened in June 2008 in the new building of the PSD Bank at the port. The large and airy room of the restaurant is characterized by warm tones. There is also a small lounge and bar at the back of the room, which draws attention as a brilliantly lit vertical plane in the nighttime streetscape.
Narrow beams of light from well-shielded directional spotlights present the dishes on the tables in crisp freshness, small brilliance effects on porcelain and glass underline the high quality, table decorations seem to glow from within. This effect occurs in particular because the lights themselves are not perceived.
The seating concept of the restaurant remains flexible thanks to the use of directional spotlights. The lights can be rotated 360° and pivoted 30° from the vertical. The illuminant is set far back in the luminaire and can therefore only be seen in the luminaire when viewed directly from below. This approach ensures that the eye is not blinded. This achieves a high level of visual comfort and the lighting is perceived as completely natural and pleasant.

Like a theater stage, the bar has a background, middle and foreground with different tasks.
The background creates the basic atmosphere, the vertical lighting supports the spatial boundaries and emphasizes the colored drinks in the bottles. The bottles on the shelf and the bartender are in the middle ground. Precise, glare-free lighting creates brilliance on the glass surfaces. The foreground is characterized by the delicious drink and its connoisseur. Tightly bundled directional spotlights allow the glass to shine from within. So it becomes a light object itself. Small accents, such as the lighting of the red vase or the silk pendant lights at the wine bar, round off the concept.
