The building that is now home to the Lensing Media Port in Dortmund’s harbour is not only a showcase project today—it was already considered one when it was first constructed. Built in Dortmund’s harbour in 1899, its Wilhelminian-style façade concealed what was the first warehouse in the region to feature modern electrical technology, including freight elevators. It was one of the first buildings in the newly established harbour and was inaugurated together with the harbour authority. Then as now, it has been a symbol of new beginnings.

The Lensing Media Port occupies a site that represents transformation in the Ruhr region. It embodies the transition from heavy industry—from coal and steel—to a hub for digital media, start-ups and future-oriented businesses.

During the building’s conversion and renovation, its historic architectural character was to be preserved while incorporating contemporary elements and accommodating modern uses. The exterior and façade lighting reflects this ambition, creating a distinctive nocturnal appearance that is visible from afar and expresses the transformation taking place at the site.

Historic brickwork is sculpturally accentuated by soft grazing light. In areas featuring glass façades, the lighting creates intriguing views into and through the new digital world. The illumination of the façade facing the harbour basin follows the rhythm of the balconies. The glass stairwell glows from within, offering a glimpse of the activity inside the building.
